In August of 2004 we were asked to begin a 4-H Sportfishing Club. This was the first 4-H fishing club for our county.  The club consisted of 6 members.  However, 2004 was the year of hurricane Charley and our county along with several others suffered grave destruction.  Due to the rebuilding efforts most of the 4-H clubs were unable to complete the full 4-H year. 

When we regrouped and started the club again in August of 2005 the, 4-H office personnel began calling us the “Castaways”, and that is how our Club obtained our name. 

  Our club meets on the 3^rd Saturday of each month, September to May, from 9 am to 11am.  Our meeting places rotate between Hardee County Lakes Park, Pioneer Park, Paynes Creek Park, and one salt water location.

 In April of 2007, 2008 and 2009 our club enjoyed camping at Hardee Lakes.   

 Our meetings consist of the usual 4-H business, an educational program; (which varies from knot tying, learning about the different types of fishing equipment, fish identification, and ethics of fishing) and we have craft time.   

 Each year our club members participate in our County Fair.  They make their own lures and other fishing related items and receive various ribbons for their efforts.  

  As part of our community services efforts we participate in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing program in December.  Also, for the past three years our club was asked by our County Commissioners to co-host a Kids fishing tournament while they host an adult one.  Each year our numbers have doubled in attendance for this great event.  This year our goal of 300 was unreachable as our attendance only reached 155 participants due to all the issue facing their parents. Those who did come out and register were given a tackle box, bait and a goodie bucket of giveaways from local and non businesses. A door prize drawing was also held.
