
CASTAWAYS 4-H SPORTFISHING CLUB

In August of 2004 we were asked to begin a 4-H Sportfishing Club. This was the first 4-H fishing club for our county. The club consisted of 6 members. However, 2004 was the year of hurricane Charley and our county along with several others suffered grave destruction. Due to the rebuilding efforts most of the 4-H clubs were unable to complete the full 4-H year. Our club meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month, September to May, from 9 am to 11am. Our meetings consist of the usual 4-H business, an educational program; (which varies from knot tying, learning about the different types of fishing equipment, fish identification, and ethics of fishing) and we have craft time.
Each year our club members participate in our County Fair. They make their own lures and other fishing related items and receive various ribbons for their efforts.

When we regrouped and started the club again in August of 2005 the, 4-H office personnel began calling us the “Castaways”, and that is how our Club obtained our name.
