Fishing Reels

Are classified into two main classes and four main types:

1.       Conventional  (spools revolve and sits perpendicular to the rod when attached)

v  Bait cast reels

Ø  Round end plates

§  Are mostly used for salt water fishing due to their large line capacity.

Ø  Elliptical end plates

§  They are smaller and lighter in weight and designed to cast farther and more efficiently, which is why most bass anglers prefer them for fresh water fishing.

v  Fly reels

Ø  Single action

§  Hand crank and simple drag system to return line to the spool.

Ø  Automatic

§  Spring system with trip lever to return line to the spool.

 2.       Fixed-Spool  (spool doesn’t revolve and sits parallel to the rod when attached)

v  Spinning reels

Ø  Open face

§  Uses a mechanism called a bail to retrieve it’s line

v  Spin casting reels (nicknamed: push buttons)

Ø  Closed face

§   Uses a collar inside its enclosed face cone to return the line.
